href="http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2010/02/19/wp-com-downtime-summary/">An official blog post has been published on the WordPress.com blog:

Today WordPress.com was down for approximately 110 minutes, our worst downtime in four years. The outage affected 10.2 million blogs, including our VIPs, and appears to have deprived those blogs of about 5.5 million pageviews.

For reasons currently unknown, the WordPress.com hosted blog service has gone down. It appears that no blogs or administration panels for any site hosted on the service are currently loading, including all free sites and more prominent VIP sites such as Technologizer, TechCrunch, CNN Network, and much of the I Can Has Cheezburger Network.

WordPress confirmed the outage about an hour ago on their official Twitter account:

WordPress.com is down, we’re working on restoring service now.

User responses are ranging from confusion, to support of the Automattic team in getting the site back online, to anger for the outage. A search for the term “WordPress” yields the latest.

Automattic founder Matt Mullenweg also tweeted from the account to reassure bloggers:

We’re investigating the source & most expedient fix. I hope to have everyone’s blogs back & running as soon as possible

Such outages are rare, and we trust that the team will learn from these technical issues to make the system even more robust from now on.

<img
