I have been poking around with themes and plugins. Are there limits to what a plugin can do? Is it possible to have a theme that does not mesh well with a plugin?

I have installed a theme and then I installed and tested a number of plugins that seemed to be well praised. But the first plugin I tried did not work at all, in fact it seemed to cause some wierd behavior to my blog even after I deactivated it.

After I started from scratch, I tested another plugin (a CAPTCHA plugin) but I noticed it also did not play well with my theme. The sign in section is supposed to look like this http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h292/ ... shot-1.jpg but the captcha area in my blog was moved to the bottom, under the comments area.

I have been told that using a plugin for this is not the way to go. I have been told that I shold just edit the comments.php file in my theme.

By the way, are there, in fact, two areas where a user can log in?

I noticed that if a user clicks on "log in" from the home page, he goes to a page that looks something like this:

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h292/Athono/login.jpg

But if he clicks to respond to a blog, he goes to the bottom of the blog like so:

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h292/ ... uemax2.jpg

Is this just a feature of my theme ("INove")?

My theme also seems to have a "templates" directory for comments. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what this is used for?

Xarzu,

from a standard theme and Plugins point there should not be any problem between a theme and Plugins . You should be able to have Plugins and if you do decide to switch theme all this functionality should still be there (and working of course).

Now there are Plugins that need you to put snippets of code in your theme files for them to work. Or others that use javascript or other scripts that might interfere with some of your other Plugins (or maybe theme options if you have a nonstandard theme). In this case I would suggest you get in touch with the Plugin developper and let him know that there's a problem (make sure you give him as much information as you can ... what Plugins you run, error message, WP version, PHP version, etc.).

For your login and comments concern, I can't tell you for sure right now. I don't think you would go and sign-up (log-in) in two different places (but I might be wrong on that). For the comments, it could very well be the case that the theme you're using has a custom comments template. I will try to look into it if I have a moment and let you know (and maybe some other forum member will be able to help you as well).

Thanks for your post. I think I will keep trying different plugins until I find one that matches my needs.

By the way, I think this forum wold look better and would be easiter to read if the text was left aligned instead of center aligned.

The fourm looks fine with me ... Dave probably already changed the text alignment.

I was thinking that maybe if the theme you were using had a custom comments template and the CAPTCHA Plugin you were trying to use changed the comments template maybe that could be why something went wrong (just a thought, not tested though).

On another note, this is my personal opinion, I would not encourage CAPTCHA on any site. There are many other good ways to protect your site from span if that was your concern.
